Together with the Churches, the few Scuole Grandi (the Great Schools) deserve one’s attention. These are the great religious and cultural centres where all the best Venetian families, including the Aristocracy in the first place, used to gather together and where nowadays cultural conferences and classical music concerts take place. These fantastic Palaces are full of wonderful works of art, so a visit is strongly recommended.
SCUOLA GRANDE DI SAN ROCCO

This is generally considered by Venetians the most important Scuola Grande in Venice; located just few steps away from the Basilica dei Frari, the beautiful 16th century building was designed by Bartolomeo Bon. Its Arch Confraternity is still nowadays very active, with religious and cultural meetings, as well as classical music concerts. Some of Tintoretto’s most incredible works are on display, as well as many artistic masterpieces of the 15th century and the historic Nacchini organ. A must see.



SCUOLA GRANDE DI SAN GIOVANNI EVANGELISTA

Based nearby the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, this is one of the greatest Scuole Grandi of Venice because of its history, art and culture. This beautiful building is a perfect example of Renaissance architecture; the wonderful entrance-hall by P. Lombardo is perfectly matched by Codussi’s elegant double stairway inside. Masterpieces from Tiepolo, Marieschi and Diziani, as well as the breathtaking ceiling with visions of the Apocalisse are on display. The Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista is very active with, among other things, classical music concerts, some of which are conducted in 18th century original costumes.



SCUOLA GRANDE DEI CARMINI

This wonderful and very important Scuola Grande is beside the Chiesa dei Carmini. There on display is a painting cycle dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine, as well as masterpieces by Tiepolo and Padovanino; it is a unique place and an absolute must.
